ONE DAY...
Most of you don't know Matt Nathanson, because he's an (sort of) independent musician from the US. By 'sort of', I mean he records albums with a small team by himself, then publishes them through the people at Vanguard, a small label. I've been a fan of him for quite some time now (his 1999 album Still Waiting For Spring is one of my all time favorite singer-songwriter records), and he's about to release his lastest album, Modern Love.
Building up to the release are, amongst others, videos of him and the rest of his team (Jason McGerr of Death Cab for Cutie!) in the studio, debating songs, spreading ideas, and building the album step by step. Like this one:
I always love this sort of thing, because it not only gives you a sneak peek 'behind' the album, but it's also one of the things I wish I could have done with my debut album.
Don't get me wrong: I had a great time at the Graveland Studio with producer Arno Krabman. But because I had to fund everything myself, we worked at breakneck speed. And thus got people's ideas and reactions after we recorded the songs. Which is too bad.
So let this video be a reminder to myself: next album, take your time. And record videos of the process, because other people will undoubtedly want to watch them.
