BEHIND THE TRACKS: OCTOBER SKIES
When people first saw the tracklist of the EP, I got a lot of “‘October Skies’? Do I know that one?” comments. And they shouldn’t, because it’s a new song. And yes, I’ve told people time and again that I already had all the songs on the debut album lined up, and no new songs would be on it.
So how did this happen? Well, originally, I wanted to record ‘The Doubter’ - a rock song that was pretty loud, but not loud enough to fit between the rest of the songs. Problem was, and Arno (producer) spotted this, that although it wasn’t too loud for the rest of the songs, it was too different.
I’ve always been a big fan of Oasis, and ‘The Doubter’ was my homage to Noel Gallagher’s band. And although it’s a good song, it simply did not fit between the American-pop-singer-songwriter-songs that make up the rest of the album.
So what to do? I was one song short. Well, after being bummed out for ten minutes, we got to work. By the time the day was over, we had a basic drum track, guitar, bass and melody. I only had to write the lyrics at home, and we could finish the song in a later session.
The lyrics are - surprise, surprise - about a girl. More specifically, about a girl who you’ve been waiting for, and finally admits she likes you too. The second verse, after the chorus, might be the risque-est lyric I’ve ever wrote, but I don’t think anyone noticed. Well, until now.
