ALBUM REVIEW
Tuesday's A Day To Remember
by Sidewalk
Reviewed by Marvin Hendriksen
"Unauthorised duplication is a violation of applicable laws, but still very welcome (spread the word!)." This wonderful humorous sentence can be found on the back of the debut album of Sidewalk. Who? Exactly. I'd never heard of the band, too. But goddammit, I'm happy that this disc found me. After three EP's, it's time for a full length album, named 'Tuesday's A Day To Remember'.
The center of Sidewalk is Coen van der Horst. He and his band (with ever changing line-up) have been making music for a few years now. The music doesn't excel in surprises, but that's also the reason it's so refreshing: the songs have no difficult constructions and because of that, they have a great sound that sticks with you for a long time. The other part which makes these songs great to listen to, is Coen's voice. The music fits his voice and vice versa. Everything's just right, even the acoustic and electric guitars.
The central theme of Coen's songs is love. Not all that surprising, but it is a theme around which the album is built. What makes the album so great, is the fact that it sounds familiar. Although most songs take the foot off of the pedal, a few of them really speed up. On my account, these songs ('Magical', 'This Better Be For Real', 'Suzannah', 'October Skies') are the better ones. Which doesn't mean you can't enjoy the quieter 'Stay' or beautiful 'Connecticut'.
Besides delivering an great album music-wise, a lot of attention went into the artwork as well. The album is free to download from Sidewalk's website, so you've got two birds with one stone: free music, and great as well.
