REVIEWS IN ENGLISH

So, They Say The World Is Turning is up to three reviews now, all of which are in Dutch. For the English speaking/reading peeps, I’ve done what every musician should do with its reviews: Google Translate the bitch. And correct it a little after. So, here goes:

After almost a year Coen van der Horst releases his second EP: a fitting answer to the previous one. ‘They Say The World Is Turning’ has a more layered sound than the previous one and sounds great & varied. The songs are well recorded and mastered by the hands of Arno Krabman and Darius of Helfteren respectively.

The
first song, This Better Be For Real, captivates you immediately and includes a compelling chorus that is played in full. The second song, Stay, is a lot shorter in length and subtlety contrasts with the previous track. For The Better, however, is yet rhythmic, longer and contains more action. EP closer October Skies sounds thoughtful and raises the same atmosphere in the chorus like This Better Be For Real does.

This second EP is a diverse one, perfect to listen when you have to ride a bike: the feeling ofSpring seems to be present in the songs. Are there any downsideto this record? Well, because it sounds neat and polished, the same can be expected from a live performance. The trick is bring the studio sound to the stage as well.

The common denominator on this EP is love, accompanied by a broad spectrum of sounds.Various effects such as compressors, reverbs and delays are used. The album leaves you wanting more. Luckilytheresthird one on the horizon.

There have been many words of praise regarding Sidewalk, including some on our site. The trio of Coen van der Horst (composer, vocals), Arno Krabman (guitar, bass), and former Room Eleven drummer Maarten Molema is committed to do everything themselves. The idea to release three EPs which will form al album is definitely not a bad idea to get name recognition and funding.

This is the second EP in a row, where the first, ‘Have Heart, Will Travel’, was reasonably well received by DJ,s, including ones from Kink FM and 3FM. Those songs were catchy, and so are these. There is no departure from the genre, which also goes for musical influences as Racoon and a balladeer.

This Better Be For Real is a powerful song to start with. The full vocal sound of Coen quells our fear of too many ‘sweet’ songs. No, these are singer-songwriter ballads with a lot more ‘oomph’. Not just vocal-wise, but there’s more spirit musically than expected. Arno’s guitar work is compelling and Martijn’s drums complement the songs well.

Stay is a sorbet to the musical palette. Fresh, short, minimal instrument and therefore intimate enough for a proper break when the album’s here. The most interesting of the bunch this time is For The Better, where enough instrumental things happen to fascinate us.A nice intro, Coen’s lyrics and Arno’s free guitar licks do the rest.

When the last note of October Skies sounds, we are eagerly waiting for the next one. The flow is good enough to build an entire album, then. But we will have to wait until ‘If Morning Ever Comes’ (the next EP) is released to continue our listening session. October Skies could, next to previously released Suzannah, very well be hit potential.

For those who like to lend new artists a helping hand, there’s the possibility to purchase a deluxe edition of this EP. While you get no new songs for your € 5, you do get some nice extra digital gifts, including early demos of these four tracks.

Isn’t it great how someone can develop over time? Singer-songwriter Coen van der Horst keeps releasing demo after demo, and you can hear him grow. While the demos from Eindhoven never satisfied (while there was talk of ‘hit potential’), this one marks a new and improved road for Sidewalk. There’s a band who’s enjoying themselves, and Coen the rocker has risen. Some songs are pretty great, but most never leave ‘the middle’. The nasal and skimpy vocal sound doesn’t match the stadium filled sound, but the songs… yes, the songs are the shit.
